The Debate

On April 5th, Florida Gulf Coast University held a debate on Immigration between the school's two political parties, the Eagles for Liberty and the College of Republicans.

Each party sent two representatives: Ryan Kennedy (21) and Robert Garon (18) represented the College of Republicans where Eric Lumpkins (21) and Alex Pilkington (23) represented the Eagles for Liberty.

The two parties discussed their takes on immigration in the debate moderated by former Cape Coral City Councilman Richard Leon. Some of the topics covered during the debate were DACA, the wall, the effect on the US economy and American jobs.

“They are taking low scale jobs. These are jobs that many Americans that don’t get a college degree are going to end up doing. It has to stop. They need to go."

- Garon Representing the College of Republicans

“Immigrants are not taking any jobs away from Americans. Americans aren’t entitled to any jobs. Those who are most qualified and fit the position the best, that’s who is most qualified.”

- Pilkington Representing the Eagles for Liberty

“The border wall is a waste of money. It’s a stupid idea. Even if you want to use it to prevent cartels from coming over they are still going to find a way to do it.”

- Lumpkins Representing the Eagles for Liberty

“Most illegal immigrants do overstay their visas. Which is why I said it is very important that we harden the visa lottery system, the visa process, to make sure people can reapply for their visa,”

- Kennedy Representing the College of Republicans
